There are plenty of elements that go into bringing life into the world and the science of conception is pretty complex. Over the years, various anomalies have emerged in the news regarding the birth of children. In this article, you will learn that biology can take many different turns into the unknown and what seems at first to be unexplainable.
Twins Can Have Different Fathers
When more than one offspring is produced in the same pregnancy, the children are referred to as twins. There are two different kinds of twins that can happen , fraternal (dizygotic) and identical (monozygotic). Identical twins develop from one zygote that splits and forms two embryos. When the children develop from two separate eggs fertilized by two separate sperm, the twins are called fraternal. You’d expect the children to have the same father in either case, but this is not always true.
Mia Washington had twin boys, but only one of the children was the biological child of her husband. When the two children were born and looked nothing alike, she later learned that she had fraternal twins with two separate fathers. Washington had become pregnant first with either the sperm of her husband or her lover. A second egg was released and fertilized when she had intercourse with the second man. Although rare, a handful of cases have been recorded of twins having different fathers, and has been given the name of heteropaternal superfecundation.
This type of birth can also happen in regards to in-vitro fertilization when lab errors lead to the contamination of eggs with the wrong sperm.
Twins Can Be Two Different Colors
High school science classes usually teach you that the dominant biological characteristics of parents typically emerge in their children. However, there have been interesting results when some couples from two different races produce twins. Some newborn twins have come out in two different colors. The chances of this happening are one million to one, but it is possible. A few cases include:
”¢ Kian and Remee Hodgdon , Although the children were born within one minute of one another, , Kian Hodgson’s skin is Black while her sister Remee is White. Both mothers of the parents are White and their both of their fathers are Black.
Ӣ Ryan and Leo Gerth , A couple from Germany gave birth to twin boys who each took the skin color of only one parent. The mother, who has a darker complexion, is originally from Ghana, while the father is from Germany.
However, there is a British couple who had two sets of twins that looked greatly different from one another. Twin sisters Miya and Leah were born in December of 2008. Miya had a head of black hair and dark complexion that resembled her father Dean Durrant and older sister Hayleigh, while Leah had blue eyes and a fair complexion like her mother Alison Spooner and older sister Lauren.
